Some places in this world touch your spirit, and then there are places that completely rewrite it.
In 2025, I journeyed to Kenya for Discover the Leader Within—a program held in partnership with the Baptiste Institute, the Legacy Plus Organization, and the Martin Luther King III family. That trip, that landscape, and that exact group of people changed me forever. Grounding daily in the rich red clay of the Masai Mara, surrounded by one of the most awe-inspiring places on Earth, and walking through the vibrant halls of Legacy College, a quiet shift took place deep within me.
I watched leadership transform right in front of my eyes. It stopped feeling like something heavy or forced—something you have to put on like armor—and became something lived simply through heart, presence, and real human connection.
The Power of Pause in the Masai Mara
Staying at the Bogani Cottages and Tented Camp offered a rare, sacred space to pause, breathe, and realign with what truly matters. In our day-to-day lives, it’s so easy to get caught up in constant motion, confusing busyness with real purpose. But immersed in the quiet wilderness, nature gently forces you to slow down and listen.
Our days were filled with simple, beautiful rhythms:
- Nourishment: Meals prepared by a wonderful South American chef, featuring fresh local ingredients and healing flavors.
- Community: Learning alongside the vibrant, brilliant students at Legacy College, whose energy and warmth was unforgettable.
- Practice: Daily yoga, movement, breathwork, and meditation out in the open air.
- Wonder: Unfiltered wildlife and breathtaking views every time we went out on a drive.
Connection was at the root of everything we did, and leadership naturally bloomed from that space.
Aligning Mind, Body, and Heart
Throughout our time there, we leaned into the familiar practices of physical movement, quiet meditation, and gentle self-inquiry.
Away from the noise of daily routines, these practices took on a deeper meaning. They weren’t about striving or “fixing” anything; they were a way to clear away distractions, listen to what was actually present, and reconnect with a sense of purpose. Anchoring that quiet reflection against the vast backdrop of the Masai Mara brought the work off the mat and straight into the heart.
Every moment gives us a gentle opportunity to show up for others, to offer kindness, and to make a meaningful difference in our own quiet way. But to hold space for others with grace, we first have to learn how to be gentle and honest with ourselves.
Kenya wasn’t just a trip—it was a quiet turning point in how I live, move, and lead.
